What are wall ties, and why do I need a survey?

Wall ties are an essential component in many homes

Wall ties are part of the wall structure, connecting the two masonry sections in a cavity wall (inner and outer). They allow for some structural movement (e.g. settling) whilst minimising movement in the façade wall, preventing damage.

In some cases, wall ties are installed poorly, which can result in wall tie corrosion, and the increased risk of damage to masonry. This is an expensive headache for any homeowner, and a survey can provide that all-important peace of mind, or pick up on issues early, before they turn into major problems.

Your experts in wall tie surveys

Extract North East Ltd is ready to inspect properties throughout the North East and West Coast. We bring decades of experience and a commitment to providing thorough, in-depth surveys that help you to make informed decisions on repairs.

You can also come to us for rendering and cavity wall insulation removal.

What type of survey do I need?

Non-intrusive:

This survey involves drilling a few small holes into the wall - in the vicinity of wall ties - allowing us to insert a small camera into your wall, and inspect the wall ties without the need to remove brickwork.

This is our preferred method, and will always be used where possible to minimise disruption.

Intrusive:

We will only carry out intrusive surveys if we cannot view the ties using our equipment, or when ties are likely to be concealed (for example, if you have cavity wall insulation filling the space). In this instance, we will need to remove some brickwork to view the ties.
